A chill is in the air and for many that can translate to high energy bills during the winter months. But here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we’re in the business of saving our customers money with our everyday low prices. We know that you, our customers, love to save a few dollars wherever possible, so here we’ve gathered up a few helpful ways to save on heating costs this winter.
1. Upgrade your insulation.
Here in the South, investing in proper insulation for your home can save you big money on energy bills all year long. While there are many different types of insulation to choose from, all insulation has this in common: it keeps the warm air in your home during the winter and the cool air in your home during the summer months.
Some types of insulation require a professional to install, but if you find that there are holes in your home where air is leaking in or out, a can of spray foam insulation or some weather stripping on windows and doors can be an affordable DIY fix that will save you lots of money.
2. Utilize the power of the sun.
When you harness the power of the sun, in winter or summer, you can save big on your electric bill. During the winter, keep the curtains open on your south-facing windows during the day to let the sunlight heat up your room. Be sure to close those curtains at night to keep the warmth in your home.
3. Dress appropriately, even indoors.
If you’re wearing a tank top and shorts inside during January, it’s going to take a lot more energy to keep you warm. When it’s cold outside, you may not want to wear a parka while you’re relaxing on your sofa, but you should still dress appropriately for the winter weather. When you get home, change into your favorite warm pair of sweatpants and slip on a snuggly pair of house slippers. Keep a blanket or two on your couch for curling up under while you watch TV.
4. Use area rugs to insulate your floors.
Walking barefoot on cold tile or wood floors is never fun, so consider adding an area rug to your favorite living space to keep your feet warm and insulate the floor. For added insulation, pair your new rug with a non-slip thermal insulation pad underneath.

Shop our extensive selection of area rugs at our Acworth, Georgia furniture store.
5. Switch the rotation on your ceiling fans.
Ceiling fans aren’t just useful in the summertime. When you switch the direction of your ceiling fan’s rotation, you can use them to keep warmer air in your room during the winter months. Switch your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise during the winter. Turn your fan on the low setting, and this will gently push the warm air back down into your room.
6. Only heat the rooms you’re using.
This one seems obvious, but if you’ve got a large family or lots of kids it can be tricky to stay on top of things. But by only heating the rooms you’re actually using, you can save big on energy bills. You can also adjust the thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter so that you’re not paying for extra heat when you don’t need it. (Remember to bundle up indoors instead!)
7. Buy a portable heater to cut down on furnace use.
Many modern portable indoor heaters are more energy efficient than running your furnace at full-blast. By utilizing a portable heater in the room you’re in, you can keep your furnace on a lower setting and still stay toasty warm.
