Sleep Disorders: What Are Sleep Disorders & What Can We Do About Them?

Here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we often say, We’re not medical professionals, but we do sleep!” With decades of expertise in the mattress industry, we sell tons of mattresses, pillows, and other sleep accessories. However, we like to think that we’re actually in the business of selling our customers better sleep.

Our end goal when we sell a mattress, pillow, or other sleep item, is to help our shoppers find the product that works best to help them sleep better. Part of that is understanding the hurdles that we must help those customers clear on their way to a better night’s sleep. As a result, we answer lots of questions related to sleep and health.

The unfortunate truth is that almost everyone has struggled, is currently struggling, or will struggle with a fully treatable sleep disorder at some point in their lifetime. It’s just a fact of life. But what are sleep disorders, exactly? Is there anything we can do to address them? And if so, what steps can we take to mitigate these issues and their symptoms?

Questions like these are exactly why we’re launching a new series of articles written to answer specific questions our customers have about common sleep issues. Our mission here is to educate consumers about some of the most common sleep-related health problems, and in the process, help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and sleep more deeply.

What Are Sleep Disorders?

In the past, we’ve written quite a bit about different factors that impact peoples’ sleep. This included discussions examining our own sleep habits, our sleep environments, and the “sleep vehicles” we use to get there. While these articles are great, there were times where we wanted to go deeper into some of these issues. So here we are – tackling one sleep disorder at a time!

sleep disorders

Do you have a hard time falling asleep? Do you have various aches or pains that make it hard to get comfortable in bed? Are you living in a state of chronic exhaustion? Do you wake up suddenly in the middle of the night? Is your sleep/wake cycle out of balance? Do you toss and turn in bed or wake up exhausted and not know why? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you likely have a sleep disorder of some kind — even if you don’t realize it!

According to the Mayo Clinic, sleep disorders are defined as any condition that impacts or alters the way that you sleep. There are many root causes for these conditions. For our purposes here, we will dive deeper into a variety of sleep issues caused by a broad range of behavioral, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, gastroenterological, and circulatory problems. Topics will include:

  • Respiratory issues such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea
  • Problems pertaining to circadian rhythms, such as insomnia and Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD)
  • Issues related to circulation, muscles and nerves, including Restless Leg Syndrome, sciatica, muscle cramping, neck and back pain
  • Teeth grinding, acid reflux and GERD
  • And much, much more!

Are You Suffering From Any of These Common Sleep Disorders?

If so, please know that many of these disorders can be solved, or at least effectively managed, with a better mattress, an adjustable base, or a properly fitting pillow! Others may require lifestyle change or diagnosis and treatment from a licensed physician. Either way, the first step in improving your sleep – and your life – is to equip yourself with the knowledge needed to make these improvements to your sleep.

If you’re struggling to combat any of the sleep disorders we listed above, you are not alone! The above issues are just some of the sleep disorders we’ll be discussing in the weeks and months to come. As we add new articles, we’ll link them below as a helpful resource. We hope you’ll join us for in-depth discussions on each of these common sleep disorders.

Lastly, if you live in the Atlanta area or elsewhere in North Georgia, we invite you to visit our 3 furniture and mattress showrooms, or our mattress-only stores in Canton, Douglasville and Kennesaw.
