All About Vaughan-Bassett
Founded in 1919, Vaughan-Bassett is one of the oldest, largest, and most reputable makers of wooden bedroom furniture in America – and when we say “in America”, we really mean that. Over the last century, Vaughan-Bassett has made a conscious effort to build their furniture business on the twin pillars of good ol’ fashioned American manufacturing and sustainable business practices. And did we mention that Vaughan-Bassett is still family-owned and operated?
When other businesses in the industry have chosen to outsource manufacturing overseas, Vaughan-Bassett has held firm to their local roots in Virginia and their commitment to American workers. They’ve also embraced a number of green policies like their One-for-One Program which commits to plant a new seedling for each tree used in their furniture production. Vaughan-Bassett has also invested millions of dollars in state-of-the-art milling machinery that allows them to get 20% more usable lumber from the trees they harvest, leading to substantially less waste. Lastly, they also source their lumber locally leading to more efficient transport, less spent fuel, and ultimately, lower costs for consumers.

“Is Bassett and Vaughan-Bassett the same company? How about Bassett Mirror Co.?”
No, Vaughan-Bassett, Bassett Furniture and Bassett Mirror are each independent companies despite sharing the Bassett name. However, as you might’ve guessed, they do share a common lineage and legacy. Enter furniture industry giant John D. Bassett. Known to most as J.D. Bassett, this industry pioneer had a role in founding and managing each of these independent companies at different times in his career – sometimes concurrently.
In the late 1800s, the Bassett family of Henry County, Virginia operated a pair of sawmills near Martinsville that produced lumber for the railroad. When business with the railroad began to slow, they were forced to look for other potential buyers for their lumber. First, they supplied lumber to furniture makers up north, but eventually the Bassetts determined it would be profitable to cut out the middleman and make furniture themselves. This led J.D. Bassett, along with his two brothers and his brother-in-law, to establish Bassett Furniture Co. in 1902 with the goal of crafting hardwood bedroom furniture. J.D. Bassett would also eventually start the Bassett Mirror Co. just next door in 1923 to handle the manufacturing of mirrors for products like vanities and dressers.
After almost two decades of furniture industry success, J.D. Bassett would also partner with B.C. Vaughan (the brother of his son-in-law, Taylor Vaughan) to start a separate business venture in 1919. This would become the Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co., located a few counties over and just north of the North Carolina state line near Galax, Virginia. After more than a century, Galax remains home to Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. to this day.
“What kinds of furniture does Vaughan-Bassett make?”
Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co. specializes in crafting both quality wood veneer and solid wood casegoods. While they have long specialized in bedroom furniture like beds, dressers, chests, and nightstands, they have more recently introduced a number of other products including dining room collections, dining sets, and desks for your home office.
Vaughan-Bassett currently offers shoppers furniture under their 3 distinct brands – Vaughan-Bassett, Artisan & Post and LMCo Home. Items branded as Vaughan-Bassett are made with high quality wood solids and veneers, while Artisan & Post products are made with wood solids only. Meanwhile, LMCo Home is a special designer collection made in partnership with Erin and Ben Napier, stars of HGTV’s hit show Home Town.
“Is Vaughan-Bassett furniture good quality?”
When you buy a piece of Vaughan-Bassett furniture, you are getting a solidly-built, ethically-built, American-made product. Every piece is made from sustainably-sourced maple, oak, pine, ash, applewood or poplar solids and veneers. Additionally, each piece features tried-and-true, quality construction methods like mortise-and-tenon joints and dovetail drawers.
“Where is Vaughan-Bassett furniture made?”
Vaughan-Bassett is very proud - and rightfully so - of the fact that 100% of their furniture is crafted here in the United States, by close to 600 American employees right in their hometown of Galax, Virginia. As we briefly touched on above, Vaughan-Bassett’s commitment to sustainability also means that virtually all of the lumber used in manufacturing their furniture is harvested from within 500 miles of their factories, with over 80% of it coming from within 200 miles. So, your new Vaughan-Bassett piece is truly an American product, made by American craftspeople, with sustainably-sourced American resources.
“Is Vaughan-Bassett furniture a good fit for me?”
Here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we’d say that Vaughan-Bassett furniture is a good fit for the vast majority of our furniture shoppers. Their bedroom sets and dining sets are well-built, crafted in America from quality materials, and fairly-priced.
However, if you’re unsure about wood veneer furniture (perhaps you shouldn’t be, but perhaps that’s a discussion for a different article), we’d steer you towards Vaughan-Bassett’s solid wood Artisan & Post brand. Also, if you’re bargain shopping for entry-level furniture for the short term, there are certainly cheaper options out there.
