Does anyone actually know the real difference between Tempur-Pedic and memory foam? Easily one of our most-asked FAQs, not a day goes by without someone asking one of our mattress experts this. It’s a good thing that we’ve got all the answers! After all, we are a Tempur-Pedic Elite Retailer! There is indeed a difference between Tempur-Pedic and memory foam, but much of that difference is in the mattress construction. Read on for our primer on Tempur-Pedic mattresses as we finally investigate Tempur-Pedic vs memory foam.
Tempur-Pedic vs Memory Foam (in Plain Language)
The Tempur-Pedic vs memory foam discussion has been going on for well over a decade. However, with the mattress in a box trend, more people than ever are interested in memory foam mattresses. In turn, more people are asking, “what’s the difference between Tempur-Pedic and memory foam mattresses?” Now there’s certainly a case to be made for the affordability of gel memory foam. But too often, eager salespeople give inquiring shoppers long-winded answers filled with industry buzzwords and jargon. We’re going to cut straight through all of that nonsense!
Memory Foam
Most basic memory foam mattresses consist of two main layers. First, there’s a soft upper memory foam layer, followed by a firm base foam layer. When you lie on these mattresses, you slowly sink into the top foam until you reach the firm base layer below. However, there’s no real structural difference between a firm, medium or plush memory foam mattress – only different thicknesses. For instance, an 8″ thick mattress may be “firm”, a 10″ may be “medium”, and a 12″ may be “plush”. These mattresses use the same exact foam, it’s just that there is more of it to sink into. As a result, different mattress thicknesses give the feeling of firmness or plushness, but they don’t always offer enough support.
The potential problem with this is that the weight of the human body isn’t evenly distributed. Heavier parts of the body like the torso, can sink further into the mattress than the limbs and head. In some cases, this can cause sagging, or a “hammock effect” over time. While many memory foam mattresses suffer from these issues, there are indeed high-quality gel memory foam mattresses available that mitigate these problems.
TEMPUR Material
The key difference between Tempur-Pedic and memory foam, is that Tempur-Pedic mattresses are made of something called TEMPUR material. Compared to most memory foams, dense TEMPUR material provides much more support while still contouring to the body. Because TEMPUR material supports your bodyweight evenly, it is resistant to sagging and will provide better relief of pressure points and better postural alignment. Also, Tempur-Pedic mattresses have substantially more support layers than a typical memory foam mattress. Where a memory foam mattress may only have two layers, a Tempur-Pedic mattress like the TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze can have as many as four or five total layers!
Additionally, while mattress experts suggest replacing your mattress every 8 years, all Tempur-Pedic mattresses carry a 10-year warranty. We frequently encounter Tempur-Pedic owners whose mattresses have lasted 15 years or longer. We can’t guarantee such results, but Tempur-Pedic mattresses regularly exceed the durability of cheaper memory foam alternatives. Due to this, we encourage customers to think of a Tempur-Pedic mattress as an investment.
But don’t just take our word for it! Check out Tempur-Pedic’s take on what separates them from typical memory foam mattresses. Tempur-Pedic is the oft-imitated original. Don’t get us wrong. There are some wonderful gel memory foam mattresses on the market. In fact, we carry many of them! But at the end of the day, they just aren’t a Tempur-Pedic. After nearly 30 years and countless rave reviews from sleepers, Tempur-Pedic continues to find ways to break the mold.
