Sleeping Well: Why Pillows Matter and When to Replace Them

At Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we will never minimize the importance of a quality, supportive mattress. We are passionate about mattresses, and we are true believers in the health benefits of sleeping well. However, sometimes a new set of pillows alone can make a huge difference! Today we’re going to talk about the roles pillows play in getting restful sleep, how old, worn pillows can cause problems, and why a quality pillow from the TEMPUR-Adapt collection may be the cure for your sleeping woes.

The Value of a Good Pillow

Unfortunately, in our line of work people use a lot of daunting, mattress industry jargon. For instance, when discussing pillows, mattress experts use terms like “cervical alignment” frequently. This term refers to your neck and upper spine which is made up of your first 7 vertebrae, also known as the cervical spine. While the purpose of a mattress involves supporting the whole spine, the function of a pillow is mostly to support your head and neck.

The ideal pillow for you may depend on your sleeping position. If you are a stomach or back sleeper, thin to medium thickness pillows are best. This is because thick pillows can tilt the head too far forward or backward in these sleeping positions. More firm pillows are best suited for side sleepers, who need more support to align their head and neck against the force of gravity. Regardless of which pillow type is best for you, a supportive and well-chosen pillow is nearly as impactful on your sleep quality as a mattress.

Pillow Problems: It May Be Time to Retire Your Old Pillows

Generally speaking, it’s public knowledge that you should replace your mattress every 7 or 8 years. We’ve even written about that on this very blog! However, did you realize that doctors and sleep experts also recommend you replace your pillows every 1 to 2 years!? Oops.

This is for several reasons. Firstly, synthetic and feather pillows alike tend to compress over time. If you’re folding your pillow just to get enough support, then you’ve kept it for far too long. When you aren’t getting the support you need, a number of symptoms can arise. Obviously, a worn, flat, or lumpy pillow can keep you tossing and turning throughout the night. According to WebMD, pain or cramping in the neck, regular headaches, muscle tightness, shoulder pain and even snoring can all be signs of a poor pillow choice, or of a pillow that no longer offers adequate support.

Secondly, beyond the recommended replacement window of a year or two, your pillow is likely to contain a ton of allergens and other junk. Oils from your skin and dead skin cells inevitably make their way into your pillow after a year of use. These things can cause acne or breakouts. Even worse, are the dust mites, mold and fungus that can grow in your old pillows. While you can take steps to slow this process by regular washing and by using pillow protectors, it is only a matter of time. If you often wake up congested, sneezing or with eye gunk, you may have these allergens in your pillow.
