At Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we find that many rug shoppers aren’t quite sure what they are looking for. Rug shopping is outside of the range of most consumer’s typical daily experience – and that’s okay! Regardless of what rug styles you hope to find, which size rug you need, or whether you’re hunting a living room rug, dining room rug, or a rug for your bedroom, Surya Rugs are some of our personal favorites.
Surya Rugs: Who, What, Why & Where
So, why do we love Surya Rugs? Who are Surya Rugs? What is a Surya rug? And where are Surya rugs made? First, let’s answer these basic questions with a short review of the brand and its history.
Founded in India in 1976 by established rug-weaver Surya Tiwari, Surya Rugs are a respected worldwide manufacturer of area rugs. Over time, Surya also began manufacturing and importing products like accessories, décor, and occasional and accent furniture. They boast a catalog of over 60,000 products across these different product categories.
Now under the leadership of Surya’s son, Satya Tiwari, they have steadily expanded into new markets. They are now a truly global company with showrooms and retailers across the United States – and across the world. In fact, back in 2016 Surya Rugs opened up their new company headquarters and a 1,000,000 square-foot distribution center right here in Georgia, just outside of Cartersville!
Where are Surya rugs made? Founded in India and now based in the United States, Surya makes their rugs in a variety of places including Turkey, India, Egypt, Belgium and China. Most of the Surya rugs in our own showroom are made in Turkey, as are many of their machine-made or power loomed rugs. However, they also still have other rugs hand-made in India and elsewhere.
We love Surya because they offer our customers a massive selection of beautiful, mid-to-high end area rugs. The fact that they have both machine-made and hand-made options, at a variety of price points, ranging from contemporary to transitional to traditional styles, means that they have options for truly every rug shopper.
Our Favorite Surya Rug Collections
That’s exactly why we wanted to introduce some of our rug experts’ favorite Surya Rug collections (listed in alphabetical order). Read the short descriptions below, check out each collection on our website, and let us know which is your favorite!
Surya Aisha Rug Collection
The first collection on our list is the Surya Aisha Rug Collection. Each rug in this collection is machine-woven in Turkey and made of either a durable 100% Polyester or 70/30 Viscose-Polyester blend. Those made with viscose fibers will have a much softer, silky feel at the cost of some durability.
Some Surya Aisha rugs are more abstract and contemporary, while others are transitional reinterpretations of classic designs. Regardless of which style you prefer, a Surya Aisha rug is perfect for those looking for transitional looks full of grays, taupes, and off-whites with occasional splashes of blue or burnt orange.
Surya Brunswick Rug Collection
Next up is the Surya Brunswick Rug Collection. Also machine-woven in Turkey, each Surya Brunswick rug is made of 50/50 Polyester-Polypropylene fibers. The added polypropylene (aka olefin) content makes these rugs more durable and resistant to fading, stains and moisture.
While mostly transitional to contemporary, several styles of Surya Brunswick rug are close to traditional. This collection heavily features colors like lighter olive and sage greens, along with navy and pale blues, teals, beiges, light grays and taupes. Additionally, many Surya Brunswick rugs are available in multiple color-ways.
Surya Cardiff Rug Collection
Each Surya Cardiff rug is machine-made in Turkey from 100% Polyester. Surya Cardiff rugs range from transitional to contemporary, but most of these area rugs fall firmly in the contemporary category.
The colors in this collection include gray shades ranging from light to charcoal, light and dark blues, teals, tans, beiges, and some mustard yellow for good measure. Between the style and color options, the Surya Cardiff Rug Collection is a good fit for those with more modern or eclectic tastes.
Surya Laila Rug Collection
The Surya Laila Rug Collection is possibly the most popular rug collection on this list. 100% Polyester and made in Turkey with a power loom, this collection is evenly split between clear transitional and contemporary styles. For this reason, a Surya Laila rug could be an amazing fit with either décor style.
With a Surya Laila rug, you can expect to see lots of cream and taupe colors with splashes of teal, pale blue, dark blue, brick red, and even mustard. Several rugs are available in multiple colorways, including a few beautiful monochromatic rugs.
Surya Mirabel Rug Collection
Just like the Surya Laila Rug Collection above, each Surya Mirabel rug is also machine-made in Turkey from 100% Polyester. More significant however, is that the Surya Mirabel Collection is the closest thing on this list to traditional style – although there are several more transitional Surya Mirabel rugs also.
As is common with traditional rugs, most of these area rugs have proper borders, intricate detail work, and lots of brick reds, olive greens, and dark blues. Others have no border and are much more neutral-colored. This collection is perfect for someone who wants to keep at least one foot planted in traditional style.
Surya Reina Rug Collection
Like many of the collections before it, the Surya Reina Rug Collection is machine-woven in Turkey. It’s also made out of 100% Polyester. The real distinguishing feature is the Surya Reina rug’s unique color palette.
Most of the rugs in this collection are clearly transitional, although there are a few contemporary pieces. But as we said above, the thing that ties this distinct collection together are the colors. If you’re looking for something with lots of light brown, red, orange, or yellow notes, a Surya Reina rug may be the one for you!
Surya Tuscany Rug Collection
The final collection on our list is the Surya Tuscany Rug Collection. Though still machine-made in Turkey, Surya Tuscany rugs are the only high pile rug on this list. All collections above are medium pile. It’s also the only collection where every single rug is between 85% and 100% polypropylene.
Not only does the higher pile give the Surya Tuscany rug a soft, comfy feel, but the polypropylene content makes it durable and resistant to staining, liquid and fading. This collection spans a wide range of colors, which makes the pile and fabric content the most defining feature here.
Additionally, if you love contemporary styling, a Surya Tuscany Rug may be the perfect fit for you. While Surya Tuscany rugs can be a blend between contemporary and transitional, this collection has the most modern, on-trend options available.
