Getting to Know Stearns & Foster
But first, why Stearns & Foster? For those readers wondering whether they should consider a Stearns & Foster mattress, we’ve put together the answers to a few FAQs we hear from mattress shoppers on a regular basis.
Where Are Stearns & Foster Mattresses Made?
Every Stearns & Foster mattress is handcrafted here in America. In fact, the vast majority of the Stearns & Foster mattresses in our Atlanta area and North Georgia mattress stores are made locally in Stearns & Foster’s factory just southeast of Atlanta in Conyers, GA.
Is Stearns & Foster a Good Mattress?
Stearns & Foster is a premium brand with an emphasis on innerspring mattresses and a high pedigree within the industry. First, they’ve been in the mattress business longer than literally anyone else – since 1846! Second, from the very beginning of the brand, Stearns & Foster has always emphasized their handcrafted manufacturing process, premium materials, and luxurious feel.
How Long Does a Stearns & Foster Mattress Last?
Every Stearns & Foster mattress includes a competitive 10-year limited manufacturer warranty. As such, a new Stearns & Foster mattress should last at least that long. Considering that most voices in the sleep industry say you should replace your mattress somewhere between every 6 and 10 years, 10 years should be sufficiently durable for the vast majority of consumers.
Who Owns Stearns & Foster?
Stearns & Foster has been crafting mattresses continually since 1846 – a staggering 177 years! Since 1983, they have operated as an independent division of Sealy, who in-turn merged with Tempur-Pedic in 2012. To this day, Stearns & Foster operates independently within Tempur-Sealy International alongside sister brands Sealy and Tempur-Pedic.
Which Stearns & Foster Mattress Is the Best?
Well, this is a loaded question with a subjective answer since the honest answer may be different for everyone. However, this is exactly what we’re hoping to answer for you below. Scroll on for a short Stearns & Foster mattress review and comparison of their latest mattresses for 2023 and beyond!
Our Stearns & Foster Mattress Reviews for 2023
Now that you’ve got a primer on who Stearns & Foster is, it’s time to dive into the new mattresses they are bringing to market for 2023. The brand-new offerings from Stearns & Foster include the 5 mattress collections below, arranged in order of price. This includes 4 innerspring models (the Studio, Estate, Lux Estate and Reserve) and a one-of-a-kind hybrid mattress (the Lux Hybrid).
Stearns & Foster Studio Mattress Review
For the first time, Stearns & Foster is introducing a new budget-conscious mattress – the Stearns & Foster Studio Collection. Don’t let the price fool you, Stearns & Foster Studio mattresses still include plenty of premium features! However, the trade-off of these savings does mean missing out on a few features that improve comfort, support, and cooling.
First, the innersprings are individually encased (or pocketed) to help isolate more motion than a typical innerspring mattress. Additional rows of Duraflex Pro Coils from sister-brand Sealy form a perimeter around the other innersprings to provide improved edge support and make it harder to collapse the mattress edge. Support layers of gel foam and a comfort layer of gel memory foam add an extra element of body-conforming comfort that you don’t often find in innerspring mattresses. Also, don’t forget Stearns & Foster’s standard moisture-wicking Tencel cover and exclusive AirVent system to help keep sleepers cool and dry.
Lastly, remember that just like every Stearns & Foster mattress, each Studio mattress is handcrafted (and signed) by a certified master craftsperson, and is adjustable base compatible. Stearns & Foster Studio mattresses are available in medium-feel with an optional pillow top. This makes them suitable for a wide variety of sleepers and sleep positions.
Features & Benefits: premium innerspring w/ an affordable price tag, encased coils to reduce motion transfer, AirVent system (w/ 4 vents) and moisture-wicking Tencel cover for cooler sleeping
Stearns & Foster Estate Mattress Review
Despite sharing many features with the Studio Collection, the jump-up in quality to the Stearns & Foster Estate Collection is significant. Yes, Estate mattresses have the same AirVent system and Tencel cover, and a similar construction to the Studio. However, there are several key quality improvements.
First, there’s Stearns & Foster’s patented, encased IntelliCoil innerspring system. Made of a single continuous piece of wire, the IntelliCoil has a lower-density coil that slowly compresses before engaging a stiffer, higher-density coil. This means that sleepers get to slowly ease into custom support unique to their own weight and body shape. This kind of personalized feel is impossible with standard innerspring coils. As a bonus, starting with the Estate, Stearns & Foster adds their perforated PrecisionEdge coils to promote better edge support while also naturally increasing airflow through the mattress, cooling it in the process.
Second, with the Stearns & Foster Estate Collection and every collection that follows it, these mattresses feature TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam. As you might guess from the name, this premium foam is made exclusively for Stearns & Foster by the original foam experts over at Tempur-Pedic. Between the added comfort layer of TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam and the custom support of the IntelliCoil innerspring system, Stearns & Foster Estate mattresses take support, comfort and pressure-relief to the next level.
The Estate collection is available in feels ranging from soft, to firm, to ultra-firm with pillow tops available in soft and firm models. This means picking the right one for you instead of a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
Features & Benefits: great balance of cost and features, adds IntelliCoil system for better support and pressure relief (plus 40% more coils than Studio models), adds TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam for better comfort, motion isolation and pressure relief, 4-vent AirVent system and Tencel cover for cool sleeping
Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Review
With the Lux Estate Collection, Stearns & Foster adds even more improvements over the mattresses above. As the name suggests, the Lux Estate mattress is essentially the Estate mattress plus a little something extra. As a result, Lux Estate mattresses have the same exclusive IntelliCoil design, TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam and ventilated PrecisionEdge coils. This already means you’re getting some of the best comfort, support, pressure relief, and motion isolation available in an innerspring.
But wait, there’s more! The Lux Estate Collection doubles the number of AirVents to 8 and integrates cooling fibers into the moisture-wicking Tencel cover. This promotes a cooler sleeping experience and even better airflow for hot sleepers. The other significant improvement is the addition of a latex comfort layer just beneath the TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam layer. This extra layer of latex foam makes the TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam a bit more responsive which translates to a more buoyant or weightless feeling.
The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Collection is available in comfort levels ranging from soft to ultra-firm. Soft and firm are available in pillow top only, while ultra-firm is only available without. However, medium is available with pillow top, and without. Mattress shoppers opting for euro pillow-top models get the added bonus of IntelliCoil Micro coils woven into the pillow-top itself between layers of TEMPUR-Indulge. These micro coils are yet another luxury innovation you’ll only find with Stearns & Foster. The result of all these added features? The Lux Estate gives sleepers an even cooler, plusher, more weightless sleep experience.
Features & Benefits: even more premium features, including IntelliCoil system and TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam for better personalized support, pressure relief, improved comfort and motion isolation, adds AirVent system with twice as many vents (8), adds cooling fibers to the Tencel cover, adds a responsive and buoyant-feeling latex comfort layer, euro-top models include woven-in IntelliCoil Micro Coil system
Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid Mattress Review
At first glance, the Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid Collection might seem like the odd one out. However, that’s not always a bad thing. While most modern, high-quality innerspring mattresses incorporate varying degrees of foams into their construction – including the rest of Stearns & Foster’s lineup – the all-new Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid is a true hybrid mattress.
As such, the Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid mattress includes some new features we’ve never seen before in a mattress – including past Stearns & Foster hybrid mattresses (formerly known as the Lux Estate Hybrid). For instance, each and every encased innerspring is individually topped by TEMPUR-Indulge foam. This is the heart of the exclusive new IntelliFlex hybrid coil system.
Thanks to IntelliFlex, the Lux Hybrid conforms to your body better than any other mattress in this lineup. Additionally, the numerous channels between the IntelliFlex hybrid coils create the best airflow of any of the Stearns & Foster mattresses we’re reviewing today. Finally, the Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid includes a unique cooling phase-change material within its Tencel cover along with the same 8-vent AirVent system as the Lux Estate above. These elements combine to make the Lux Hybrid mattress the coolest-sleeping mattress in Stearns & Foster’s new lineup as well. The new Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid mattress is available in soft, medium and firm feels.
Features & Benefits: cutting-edge hybrid construction, IntelliFlex hybrid coils individually-topped with TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam offer excellent body-contouring and pressure relief along with hundreds of channels for better airflow, AirVent system w/ 8 vents, moisture-wicking Tencel cover with additional phase change material for superior cooling
Stearns & Foster Reserve Mattress Review
Finally, let’s talk about Stearns & Foster’s crowning achievement in product design – the Stearns & Foster Reserve Collection. To start with, Stearns & Foster Reserve mattresses are unapologetically extravagant. These luxurious, top-shelf mattresses have all the bells-and-whistles.
Do you want top-tier comfort and premium features? Well, Stearns & Foster Reserve mattresses are loaded. The Reserve boasts the most IntelliCoils of any Stearns & Foster mattress (20% more than Estate and Lux Estate), PrecisionEdge support coils, more TEMPUR-Indulge foam than any other mattress, a premium latex layer, an 8-vent AirVent system, a Tencel cover with integrated cooling fibers, and IntelliCoil Micro springs woven into every euro pillow-top.
This mattress is the pinnacle of the lineup and offers Stearns & Foster’s best support and best comfort. Period. Available in soft, medium and firm, with soft and firm euro pillow-top options.
Features & Benefits: top-tier, best-in-class innerspring mattress construction, 20% more IntelliCoils than Estate and Lux Estate for unsurpassed contouring/support, more TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam than any other Stearns & Foster mattress for superior comfort, responsive latex comfort layer, AirVent system w/ 8 vents, and Tencel cover woven with extra cooling fibers
Drawing Conclusions: Which Stearns & Foster Mattress Is Right for You?
Now that you’ve seen the latest mattresses from Stearns & Foster and their features, which mattress do you think is the best fit for you? Well, it all depends on what you’re looking for, because each collection has something special to offer sleepers. Let’s recap.
The Stearns & Foster Studio Collection is ideal for those who want many of the premium features of a Stearns & Foster mattress at a more affordable price. This lets those with a tighter budget finally have the luxurious, premium innerspring mattress they’ve always wanted.
The Stearns & Foster Estate and Lux Estate collections strike a great balance between features and cost. While the Lux Estate mattress has extra flourishes absent from the Estate mattress, both of these collections include the patented IntelliCoil innersprings along with TEMPUR-Indulge memory foam made exclusively for Stearns & Foster by Tempur-Pedic. As a result, we think both are right at the sweet spot that offers the best value to many consumers.
As for the unique Lux Hybrid mattress, it is ideal for anyone who wants a body-conforming, cool-sleeping hybrid mattress. Do you want the comfort of a high-end memory foam mattress? How about the support of a premium innerspring mattress? If so, the Stearns & Foster Lux Hybrid mattress may be the perfect balance for you!
Finally, the Reserve mattress is for the no-compromise innerspring mattress shopper who wants elegant design and best-in-class performance. With a mountain of premium features, the Reserve is perhaps the most over-engineered innerspring mattress on the market. And and we mean that in the best way possible!
