Before we even tackle Piana’s unique technology and their benefits, you should know that Piana Sleep comes from a serious pedigree. As a division of parent company Piana Technology, Piana Sleep is fairly new. However, the Piana family is one of the oldest and most established of Italy’s world-renowned textile families, producing textiles like wool as far back as 1582! What Sets Piana Sleep Apart | V/Smart Technology, Molecular Printing & Sustainable Innovation
With 23 different patents related to both woven and non-woven fibers, parent company Piana Technology specializes in pushing the known limits of textiles, adding to their performance and functionality. But how do these textile innovations make a smarter, comfier, and more environmentally responsible mattress? Here are three key features unique to Piana Sleep that sets their mattress catalog apart from the competition.
1) V/Smart Fiber Technology
Perhaps the most significant innovation that Piana brings to the table is a patented new fiber technology they call V/Smart. Each Piana Sleep mattress features multiple comfort and support layers of Piana’s revolutionary V/Smart Fiber. While V/Smart is not technically a foam, it mimics the comfort, contouring and pressure-relieving properties of viscoelastic memory foam, with a little of the extra responsiveness people would expect from a latex foam. For this reason, it is perhaps best thought of as the next evolution of the foam mattress. But if it’s not exactly a foam, what is it?
According to PIana Sleep, V/Smart consists of layers of high-loft, non-woven, vertically-arranged fibers. Engineered to be a more sustainable alternative to polyurethane-based foams, the vertical-arrangement of fibers (think the letter “V”, or the side of an accordion) creates small channels making it considerably more breathable than foam, while also being up to 50% lighter. Also, unlike some foams, V/Smart is also completely non-toxic, odor-free, free of VOCs and off-gassing, and can be produced using 70% less CO2 emissions than polyurethane foam – but we’ll get more into that below.
2) Molecular Printing
Another area of Piana’s technical innovation is something called “molecular printing”. This process is what Piana calls their proprietary fiber treatments.
Mattress manufacturers often add different layers to their mattresses, each one serving a different function. However, Piana Sleep also has the ability to infuse certain characteristics into the mattress fibers at the molecular level. From antimicrobial properties and dust mite protection, to active cooling phase-change materials and lavender aromatherapy, Piana Sleep’s molecular printing allows them to enhance the mattress and its cover in a variety of ways, helping you relax and drift off to a restful sleep.
3) Sustainable Production & Recyclability
Arguably the biggest revolution being waged by Piana Sleep is that of their uniquely green mattress manufacturing and recycling processes. They’ve even stated that their explicit goal is to be a catalyst for improved sustainability within the mattress industry.
To start, each Piana Sleep mattress includes up to 40% recycled material – enough to save approximately 600 plastic recycled water bottles from the landfill with every mattress! When compared to traditional mattress manufacturing, making a Piana Sleep mattress requires around 46% less emissions and approximately 52% less energy. Furthermore, the energy that is used in production largely comes from Piana’s own solar-equipped manufacturing facilities.
Lastly, keep in mind that Piana Sleep mattresses are zero-waste products that are 100% recyclable. In fact, Piana offers consumers the Piana Take-Back Promise where they guarantee to take your mattress back to their factory for full recycling upon the end of its life. There’s really nothing like this anywhere else in the industry.
