Why Nectar vs Purple? What Do They Have in Common?
Ultimately, if consumers are asking, here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we believe we have an obligation to answer – and lots of shoppers ask about Nectar vs Purple. Nectar Sleep and Purple Mattress occupy a somewhat similar spot in the busy mattress market. Both of these companies are also relatively new compared to older, more-established mattress industry stalwarts like Sealy, Tempur-Pedic, Serta, Stearns & Foster or Beautyrest.
Additionally, both Purple and Nectar were frontrunners in the mattress-in-a-box craze ramping up in the mid-to-late 2010s. This means that either of these mattresses can be conveniently purchased online and delivered to your doorstep. It also means that every mattress in both of these lineups is adjustable base compatible. Like many mattress-in-a-box brands, Nectar and Purple also both offer consumers peace of mind through exceptional trial periods and warranties.
Nectar vs Purple: How Are They Different?
Despite having all these things in common, this is where the Nectar vs Purple similarities end. As you’ll discover below, there are tons of differences as well. To better understand these key differences, we’re going to discuss how the mattresses are constructed, what lineup each brand offers, the general feel of these mattresses, their price point, and the guarantees and warranties Purple Mattress and Nectar Sleep offer their customers.
Nectar vs Purple | Mattress Construction
The single biggest difference between Purple Mattress and Nectar Sleep is the design and construction of their mattresses. Let’s start with Nectar since it’s more straight-forward.
Nectar Mattress Construction (Gel Memory Foam)
Nectar mattress is one of the old-school, original mattresses-in-a-box. As such, the construction is fairly simple. Although the composition of the different Nectar mattresses does vary, every Nectar mattress has a woven, heat-wicking cover and three distinct foam layers – a firm base foam, a transitional foam, and a comfortable gel memory foam on top. Depending on which model you choose, there are different types of foams and thicknesses in these layers, plus additional features like phase change material or upgraded cooling mattress covers.
Without getting into the specifics of each mattress, the main feature to keep in mind is the gel memory foam comfort layer. Gel-infused memory foam is an improvement over standard memory foam because it is slightly more responsive and is less likely to trap heat.

Purple Mattress Construction (Purple Grid)
Here’s where Purple and their entire mattress line stands alone. Rather than a memory foam, gel memory foam, innerspring or hybrid mattress design, Purple mattresses really are in a category of their own. This is because of a patented layer of hyper-elastic polymer called the GelFlex Grid, commonly known as the Purple Grid. Purple mattresses have base layers of either comfort base foam or a hybrid system of foam and pocketed coils. However, Purple constructs the top layer of every single mattress with their unique Purple Grid.
Purple themselves state that the grid is both firm and soft in all the right places, and perhaps that’s the best way to put it. The grid adapts to your body regardless of sleep position, is completely temperature neutral since it’s composed of 80% air, and is more responsive than memory foam or similar materials.

Nectar vs Purple | Product Lineup Comparison
What Are My Options?
Currently, Nectar Sleep makes three different mattresses – the Nectar Classic, Nectar Premier, and Nectar Premier Copper. By contrast, the Purple Mattress product line has more options to choose from. It includes five different models, including the original Purple Mattress, Purple Plus, Purple Hybrid, Purple Hybrid Premier 3 and Purple Hybrid Premier 4.
Aside from the significant differences between the Purple Grid and Nectar’s gel memory foam, you’ve likely also noticed that Purple makes hybrid mattresses with base foam and pocketed coils (Purple Hybrid, Hybrid Premier 3 & Hybrid Premier 4) while Nectar doesn’t have any hybrid models to choose from. For something similar, you’d have to look at Nectar’s sister company, DreamCloud.
How Do Their Prices Compare?
Between Nectar and Purple’s budget options, the Nectar Classic is typically several hundred dollars less than the original Purple Mattress across the different available mattress sizes. This is consistent with Nectar’s position as an affordable, accessible, entry-level to mid-tier mattress brand.
On the high end of these product lines however, the Purple Premier Hybrid 3 and 4 are more luxurious and expensive than anything Nectar offers. Due to this, it is best to compare Purple’s premium mattress models against other high quality, luxury mattresses like Tempur-Pedic. As a result, Purple should be considered a mid-to-high tier mattress brand depending on which mattress option you choose.
How Do They Feel?
Describing how the Purple Grid feels is a very difficult thing to do. It’s a bit squishy or bouncy for lack of a better term. However, while that squishiness arguably cradles curves and pressure points as good or better than just about anything else on the market, it’s also quite firm in other areas where body weight is applied more evenly. This provides sleepers with a wonderful balance between comfort and support.
If you’re accustomed to memory foam mattresses, you’ll find a much more familiar feel with a Nectar. You can expect that distinct, slow-moving, gel memory foam that you can really sink into. The flip side is that it’s not going to be as responsive as a Purple, nor regulate temperature like a Purple.
Although mattress feel is largely subjective, most shoppers agree that the original Purple and Purple Hybrid are the firmest, while the Purple Plus, Purple Premier 3 and Purple Premier 4 are more plush feeling due to additional Purple Grid and foam. As for Nectar, consumers tend to agree that the Nectar Classic is the firmest, while the Nectar Premier and Premier Copper are a bit less so.
Nectar vs Purple | Warranties, Guarantees & Sleep Trials
When it comes to manufacturer warranties and guarantees, you really can’t go wrong with either Purple Mattress or Nectar Sleep. As we briefly discussed above, both of these companies offer buyers generous, consumer-friendly warranties and guarantees.
However, we have to give the edge to Nectar here. Nectar offers their “Forever Warranty” along with an industry best, 365-night, at-home trial. That means that if after 364 nights you decide that your Nectar mattress isn’t right for you, you can return it. The only other mattress brand on the market offering a limited lifetime warranty and a full year sleep trial is Nectar’s sister brand DreamCloud.
By contrast, Purple offers a very good 100-night sleep trial, along with a 10-year limited warranty. For reference, 10 years is longer than mattresses are supposed to last according to the mattress industry. Also, keep in mind that for the overwhelming majority of sleepers, the break-in period for a new mattress is usually just a few days to a few weeks. So 100 nights should be more than enough time to decide if you love your new mattress. That means Purple’s warranty and comfort guarantee are more than sufficient – but Nectar still offers consumers the best guarantees in the industry.
