After partnering with two other couples to restore and re-open the historic general store in their hometown of Laurel, Mississippi in 2016, business took off! A Brief History of Laurel Mercantile and Scotsman Co.
While Erin would flit around town working her artistic magic on old homes, Ben spent many days amongst the sawdust at the old Scotsman woodshop down the street from Laurel Mercantile. Initially, he began making custom, reclaimed wood furniture for he and Erin’s home, including a custom crib for the baby girl they had on the way. Eventually, he began making one-of-a-kind pieces to sell at Laurel Mercantile. This was the start of Laurel Mercantile’s Scotsman Co. furniture brand.
Needless to say, the folks around Laurel absolutely loved Ben’s solid wood, heirloom-quality furniture! With hard work and a deep respect for the way things used to be done, LMCo. and their Scotsman Co. brand of custom furniture began turning heads. Since they handcraft all their furniture, Ben and his team of woodworkers had an increasingly hard time keeping up with demand. That's where their new partnership with Vaughan-Bassett comes in!
Vaughan-Bassett is an industry leader in high-quality, American-made furniture in their own right. In fact, we’ve written about Vaughan-Bassett before on this very blog, and they are one of only three brands featured in WFMO’s exclusive Made in the USA gallery! So they know a thing or two about handmade, heirloom furniture. This makes them the perfect partner for Laurel Mercantile Co.
Scotsman Co. American Heirloom Collection
Vaughan-Bassett crafts the Scotsman Co. American Heirloom Collection through their partnership with LMCo. It is Laurel Mercantile’s flagship line of bedroom furniture and includes beds, dressers, mirrors, chests, nightstands and bed benches! Just like the custom furniture Ben Napier makes in his workshop, Vaughan-Basset makes each piece of Scotsman Co. American Heirloom furniture by hand. Furthermore, Ben designed every single piece himself! They don’t use the word “heirloom” lightly. This classic, solid maple and birch furniture will stand the test of time and is something you can pass on to your own kids and grandkids.
LMCo. Home Collection
Sometimes written as “Laurel Mercantile Co. Home Collection”, this collection is Laurel Mercantile’s product line for the budget conscious. The LMCo. Home Collection, just like the Scotsman collection above, is based on Ben’s custom woodwork. The only difference is that Vaughan-Bassett finishes these pieces with high-quality wood veneers instead of solid wood. Lastly, this beautiful bedroom furniture is equally worthy of the heirloom name and will provide both beauty and function to your bedroom for decades!
