We’re always looking for ways to save a few bucks, which is why we’ve been helping the Atlanta community save money on furniture since 1988. While our furniture outlet pricing can help you save plenty of cash on a new living room or dining room set, what about other areas of your house where you can save?
We know that when you have a large family the costs of doing laundry can quickly add up. Learn how to cut costs in your laundry room with a few of our favorite time and money-saving laundry room hacks.
1. Keep old-school products on hand for stain removal.
Rather than spending lots of money on expensive specialty cleaning products, many traditional and natural items can do double or triple duty when cleaning your home.
We recommend always stocking white vinegar, baking soda, oxygen bleach, hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice and natural soap in your cleaning cabinet. Use any of these items for all sorts of household cleaning, even your laundry.
2. Don’t underestimate the power of the sun!
Solar power is also multi-purpose. Whether your home’s energy is powered by solar panels or not, almost anyone can take advantage of solar power while doing laundry.
We all know that it saves money when you dry your clothes outside the old-fashioned way, but for certain tough stains the sun has super stain-fighting powers. One blogger found it particularly useful for getting stains out of cloth diapers. Hang your wet clothing out to dry and let the sun do its magic!
3. Use household items to remove ink stains.
If you’ve ever left a pen in your pocket before tossing your shirt in the wash, you know how difficult ink stains can be to get out of clothing. Or so it seems.
As it turns out, ink stains can be removed from clothing fairly easily with an alcohol-based solvent like hairspray or hand-sanitizer. This blogger conducted an experiment and both common household products performed equally well in the test.
4. De-grease your clothing with dish detergent.
If it’s a grease stain you’re dealing with, turn to the same thing you use to get grease off of your dishes. If a grease-fighting dish detergent like Dawn can clean birds after oil spills, it can surely get the grease out of your clothing. Simply rub some detergent into your stain, let it sit for awhile, and then throw it in the laundry. Voila! Clean and fresh.
5. Fold your laundry the Marie Kondo way.
Save your sanity and wear-and-tear on your clothing by folding all of your laundry as soon as it’s dry. As we shared in our recent closet de-cluttering blog post, Marie Kondo’s life-changing, magical method of folding your clothes can make your wardrobe feel more organized, but folding can also help preserve the longevity of your clothing, which saves you money over time.
When you fold and store your clothing vertically as she suggests, you’ll also be able to see all of your clothing at a quick glance, which can help you simplify your wardrobe and spend less money on new clothing. (Which means a bigger budget for sprucing up your home decor!)
