If you’ve ever stepped into our Design Center, you’ve seen it for yourself – an entire wall covered with fabric and leather swatches. It’s not just a few choices – it’s a full spectrum of textures, colors, and patterns designed to help you find the exact right look for your home. But we get it. It can be a tad overwhelming.
Designing custom furniture sounds exciting – until you realize just how many choices you have to make. Arm styles? Leg styles? Fabric types? Wood finishes? Cushion fills? Wait…what even is a cushion fill?
Here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we hear these comments all the time. Whether you’re ordering a custom sofa, sectional, recliner, accent chair, dining table, or anything else, the process can seem daunting. But it doesn’t have to be. In fact, once you understand the steps involved, designing your perfect piece of furniture is far more simple (and more fun) than you might expect.
That’s exactly why we created this guide – to answer the most common questions we hear about how custom furniture ordering works, and to help you feel confident about your next steps. Let’s take it one step at a time.
What Is Custom Order Furniture?
Custom order furniture simply means that you get to personalize and customize certain aspects of a piece before it’s built. Here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we have tons of custom furniture options available from over a dozen different brands. However, most custom order furniture falls into two categories – upholstered seating (like sofas and chairs) and casegoods (such as tables, dressers, chests, etc.)
Depending on the furniture manufacturer and type of furniture you’re ordering, you might get to choose:
- The upholstery fabric or leather
- Wood finishes, stains, or paints
- Different styles of arms, legs or feet
- Types of drawer pulls and other hardware
- Styles of chairs or stools (for custom dining sets)
- Frame configuration (especially for sectional sofas)
- Types of cushions, foam densities and suspension systems for seating
- Motion options (power or manual recline, swivel bases, rocker, glider, etc.)
- Decorative details such as nailhead trim, contrasting pillows, welt type, and more
In other words, you’re not choosing something pre-made and sitting in a warehouse. You’re selecting the exact version of the piece that best fits your life, your space, and your style.
Why Do Shoppers Choose Custom Furniture?
People choose to go the custom route for a few common reasons:
- Better Fit: Sectional too big? Sofa too deep? The custom order process lets you choose the frames and dimensions that work with your room – not the showroom floor.
- Style Control: Want a bold statement fabric or unique finish? Prefer kid-friendly or pet-friendly performance fabrics? You get to choose what works best for you.
- Long-Term Satisfaction: Instead of settling for “close enough,” you get to create something you’ll love in your home for years and years to come.
- Unique Needs: Whether you need extra lumbar support, a firmer seat, a sleeper option for guests, or a recliner with a power lift, custom furniture gives you more control over the features included in your new furniture.
What’s the Custom Order Process Like?
Finally, let’s talk about the custom order process. While the exact process varies depending on the manufacturer, here’s a general idea of what to expect when you custom order through Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet:
1. Choose Your Perfect Piece
Start by selecting the type of furniture and frame that you want: sofa, loveseat, sectional, recliner, chair, ottoman, etc. Our team can help you find the exact right style, scale, and comfort level for you and your home.
2. Select Your Custom Options
Here’s where the fun begins! Depending on the brand, you’ll choose from hundreds of fabric or leather options, plus other details like arm styles, wood finishes, cushion types, pillow fills, and much more.
3. Review Your Custom Selections
Our team will help you review all your choices to make sure everything looks and feels just right. Whether you’re working with one of our knowledgeable salespeople or one of our in-house designers, they’ll walk you through every single detail so there are no surprises.
4. Finalize Your Order
Custom orders do require a deposit, but once you’ve finalized your selections and paid your deposit, we’ll place the order with the manufacturer. Please keep in mind that the delivery time frame varies depending on the manufacturer and type of furniture, but our team will keep you updated on the timeline.
5. Delivery or Pickup
Finally, as soon as your new piece or pieces arrive at our warehouse, we’ll contact you to collect the final payment balance and schedule your pickup or delivery. With our Premium Delivery Service, we can bring your new custom furniture into your home, set it up exactly where you want it, and haul away all the packaging.

How Long Will It Take to Get My Custom Furniture?
As we hinted at above, each custom furniture manufacturer has its own lead time, and timelines can vary based on current demand, production schedules, and shipping logistics. While some brands like England Furniture and Mayo Furniture are very well-known for having some of the fastest turnaround times in the industry, it’s important to remember that production times from any manufacturer can vary depending on logistics and your furniture’s level of customization.
Our team will give you a realistic estimated timeline based on the brand, the options you’ve chosen, and current production schedules – and will keep you informed every step of the way!
