How To Choose A Mattress: Tips for Finding the Perfect Bed

IIf you get the recommended 8 hours of sleep every night and live until age 75, you will spend nearly 25 years of your life, or about one third of your life, fast asleep! You spend a significant amount of your life in bed, so it’s important to choose the right mattress!

There are many different types of mattresses on the market, and here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we offer plenty of sleeping options to choose from. The process of determining the best mattress varies with each person, but with these tips for choosing a mattress, you can find the perfect mattress for your sleeping comfort.

Understand your own sleeping style

Some people prefer a cushy plush mattress while other people enjoy sleeping on a very firm mattress. Much of this choice comes down to personal preference, but be sure to consult your doctor for their recommendations. Your age, weight and typical sleeping style (whether you sleep on your side, back or stomach) are all factors in determining which mattress type best fits your needs.

Pick the type of mattress that fits your needs:

There are a few different standard types of mattresses, each of which offer their own set of benefits:

Innerspring mattresses

The traditional type of mattress that most people are familiar with is an innerspring mattress that is made from a layer of inner metal coils, surrounded by cushioning. These mattresses vary in levels of firmness, and innerspring mattresses featuring pocketed coils can help to reduce the effects of movement if you have a sleeping partner that tosses and turns throughout the night.

Memory foam mattresses

Commonly associated with Tempur-Pedic mattresses, many brands now offer memory foam options. The layer of foam “remembers” your body’s shape and contours to offer a customized sleeping experience. While firmness levels vary for this type of mattress, memory foam is a great choice for people who prefer a firmer mattress.

Latex mattresses

Similar to memory foam, latex mattresses offer a similar sleeping style but are ideal for people who suffer from allergies. Latex is naturally resistant to microbes and germs, as well as dust mites and mold.

Hybrid mattresses

These mattresses combine the best of both worlds and usually feature a blend of pocketed coils and memory foam. With a hybrid mattress, you’ll get support and contouring while you sleep and the movements of your sleeping partner are minimized.

What type of mattress can your bedroom accommodate?

If you’re planning to upgrade the size of your new mattress, measure your bedroom to make sure the mattress and bed frame will fit.

Try out different options before you buy a mattress

The best way to know for sure that you’re getting the right mattress is to test drive them in the store. Take your time and try to spend 15 minutes per mattress, laying on your back, your stomach and your side for 5 minutes each.

Visit our Mattress Outlet in Canton, GA to find plenty of mattresses in a variety of price points and levels of firmness. Our in-store associates guide you through the process of choosing the right mattress and answer any questions you may have.

Once you’re in the store, make sure to communicate your needs and sleeping style to one of our associates. Let us know about your typical sleeping habits as well as any physical pain, medical conditions and who you share your bed with. (That includes spouses as well as any kids or pets that join you in bed at night!)

Give your new mattress time to adjust

We offer free local delivery on mattress purchases of $799 or more, and same day delivery is available as long as you purchase before 3pm. Once you have your new mattress set up in your bedroom, you’ll want to give it time for your body to adjust.

Much like a runner has to break in a new pair of running shoes before a big race, your brand new mattress also has a break-in period. Depending on the mattress, this typically lasts anywhere from one week to a month. It takes time for your body to adjust to your new mattress so be patient.
