Should I Buy a Mattress Online or In-Store? Here's Why You Should Try Before You Buy

So you’ve decided that your old mattress just isn’t cutting it anymore and it’s time for a new one. Once you’ve started the mattress shopping process, one of the very next questions most shoppers have is “Should I buy a mattress online or in-store?”

A few years ago, this would’ve seemed like a silly question. But not anymore. These days, whether you’re looking at a mattress from a leading mattress-in-a-box brand or a mattress industry titan like Beautyrest, Sealy, Serta, Stearns & Foster, or Tempur-Pedic, it has never been easier to order online and have your mattress delivered to your home. But is buying online a good fit for you?

By the end of this short article, you’ll have a better idea of what is best for you as well as what our mattress experts here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet recommend.

Should I Buy a Mattress Online or In-Store?

Woman with glasses thinking, "Should I buy a mattress online or in store?"

Do y’all remember a decade ago when online shoe-seller Zappos first took the internet by storm? For years, people had told them that there is no way that people would buy something like shoes off of the internet. Why? Because you can’t even try them on first! But those people were wrong. So how did Zappos convince millions of shoe shoppers that buying shoes online was a “good fit” for them? Well, they offered customers an absolutely absurd return policy — and they even covered return shipping.

If this idea sounds familiar, that’s because it is! A few short years later, when mattress brands like Casper, Nectar, DreamCloud, Purple and others first started selling mattresses-in-a-box that could be ordered online and shipped direct to your home, they faced the same dilemma. They thought, “How can we get customers to trust our mattresses if they can’t even try them before buying?” Their solution? Unprecedented risk-free sleep trials and generous return policies. Many brands that will direct ship a mattress to your front door offer trial periods ranging from 60 days, to 90 days, to even an entire year!

Since then, shopping mattresses online has become even more easy and convenient. In many cases, you aren’t even limited to a mattress-in-a-box when it comes to buying online. So why wouldn’t you just buy online and save yourself the hassle of leaving home? Are there any real reasons why you shouldn’t? Well, there are a few reasons you may want to consider visiting a brick-and-mortar store.

Do I Need to Try My Mattress Before Buying?

First, we should preface this by stating that many mattress stores do sell mattresses online, ourselves included. In fact, some of our most popular sellers are mattresses-in-a-box. But as we mentioned above, these brands all have something in common — generous trial periods and returns. While this is a great thing for you, the customer, why do you think they offer them? Because unfortunately, mattress shoppers who order a mattress online without trying it first are much more likely to return it.

You will find mattress-in-a-box products from Purple, Nectar and DreamCloud at all six of our North Georgia furniture and mattress stores. These brands initially only sold their mattresses direct-to-consumer on the internet. That means that after starting off selling online-only, these companies eventually came to recognize the benefits of selling through “normal” brick-and-mortar mattress stores like us.

You are a person, not a number. No matter what firmness rating or comfort level some mattress reviewer online has given a certain mattress, you won’t really know how it feels to you until you lie on it yourself. That goes for literally every person and every mattress. Every sleeper is unique due to a combination of factors like weight, body shape and sleep position.

So here is our honest, unfiltered opinion. Time and time again, our own experience at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet has shown that customers who try their mattress first are almost always more satisfied with their purchase. We don’t shy away from telling this to any and every customer who asks.
