As the weather cools down this fall, you can bet we’re ready to enjoy the beautiful scenery that our home state of Georgia has to offer. We can’t think of a better way to spend a day than exploring God’s creation, viewing the changing leaves and soaking in the cool autumn air. (Except, of course, an afternoon shopping in theLOFT at either of our Atlanta furniture stores, in Woodstock/Acworth or Hiram/Dallas!)
While there are hundreds of stunning hiking trails spread across the state of Georgia, here are a few of the best hikes near Atlanta:
Chattahoochee River

The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area offers plenty of opportunities for enjoying nature including boating, fishing, cycling, and of course, hiking.
One of the most popular hiking trails in this area is the East Palisades Trail which will take you through a bamboo forest and over scenic bluffs overlooking the river below. A daily parking pass costs $3 per car and is required to park at the trailhead.
Arabia Mountain

The Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area feels like you’ve stepped into another world, even though it’s only a 30 minute drive from Midtown Atlanta.
This area, which also includes Panola Mountain State Park, features some of the most stunning hiking, running and cycling trails around. Explore the moonlike scenery of Arabia Mountaintop or round up the whole gang for some family photos. With sites such as the new granite overlook at Panola Mountain State Park and the iconic Vaughters Barn, this park serves as the perfect backdrop.
Sweetwater Creek State Park
One of the most popular destinations for outdoor exploration near Atlanta is Sweetwater Creek State Park. Only minutes from downtown Atlanta, you can take a trip back in time as you walk through wooded trails along the creek past white water rapids to reach the ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company’s Civil War-era textile mill.
The inside of the mill is closed to visitors, but exploring the exterior of the historic mill is greatly encouraged.
Red Top Mountain State Park

Nestled next to Lake Allatoona, Red Top Mountain State Park is a favorite among Atlanta residents. If you’re looking to spend some time in the Great Outdoors, this park is the perfect spot.
This park offers six hiking trails, in addition to fishing, boating, swimming and camping. The Iron Hill trail offers 4 miles of biking and hiking, passing along the lakeshore and the remains of an iron ore mining community.
Kennesaw Mountain Trail

Take in views of the Atlanta skyline while you take a trip back in time and explore Civil War battlefields at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.
This park encompasses nearly 3,000 acres with multiple hiking trails. The Kennesaw Mountain loop hike from the Visitor Center to Cheatham Hill is one of the best ways to take in all of the stunning views that this park has to offer.
